How Wireless Technology Works and Why Headphones no Longer Need Wires

A wireless headset that works with Bluetooth is gradually replacing the usual headphones with wires. This choice of users is primarily determined by a more comfortable way of operation.

Signal transmission methods without cable

Information from the gadget to additional equipment is transmitted in various ways. Through:

  • infrared radiation;
  • radio signal;
  • Bluetooth.

In each of the cases, technologies are used that have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Infrared (IR) headphones

When developing them, the same principle was used as when creating TV control panels. The LED from the transmitter sends a signal to the headphone receiver. On the positive side, the same audio source goes to different headsets. The role of the receiver is also strictly defined. It receives the signal, decodes it and amplifies it at the same time. The downside is the required coverage angle. The emitted beam is transmitted at an angle of 90 degrees.

Stable signal reception is possible only in case of line of sight of the transmitting device. If you turn your head, the signal will be intermittent. They use such headphones only when they are strictly in one position, for example, when watching TV programs, while on the couch located right in front of the screen. It is impossible to move around the room while the devices are operating. The headphones are powered by batteries or rechargeable batteries. The cost of such products is low. There is no point in paying for expensive options.

This pair also consists of a transmitter and a receiver in headphones. The signal is sent in the FM band at 863-865 MHz. On a single charge, this gadget can work for 20 hours.

Bluetooth headphones

The most common wireless communication option that can connect to any of the devices that support bluetooth technology. This type of connection is almost never found on TVs. Imposed restrictions: 10 meters, according to the manufacturers, but in practice, the stable reception distance is limited to only 5 meters. If a wall enters the signal path, the distance is reduced to 2-3 meters.

The advantage of such additions is a unique type of encoding, which is decrypted only by the receiver, with the pairing already configured for the gadget. The radio signal can be intercepted by any device that picks up radio waves. It is impossible to work simultaneously with several headphones via such a connection.

Modern ways of coding

Experts disagree. Some of them believe that this type of headset is not suitable for constantly listening to music. Bluetooth transmission, which requires compression of files even in MP3 format, is limited in frequency playback. The sound quality decreases. Currently, there are two encoding methods that allow you to listen to music without frequency restrictions, these are the LDAC and aptX HD standards, but they are not yet so widespread.

The question of whether to use a wireless headset for listening to music remains open. You have to choose between convenience and quality.
