Sennheiser IE 80S BT refutes the established belief that wireless headphones do not reach the quality of wired ones. This model sounds very good and will suit even the most fastidious listeners. Alas, it has drawbacks in the form of weak autonomy and a high price

Sennheiser IE 80S BT Wireless In-Earbuds: A Complete Review.

Sennheiser in Ear IE 80s

In the market of wireless earbuds, many models have good sound quality. The German company Sennheiser decided not to stand aside and embodied all of its achievements in the new wireless earbuds IE 80S BT, which we visited in our review.

Package Content

Sennheiser traditionally delights its customers with an extensive set of accessories. Model IE 80S BT was no exception and came with earbuds:

• fabric cover
• silicone earpads (S, M, L)
• two-flange silicone earpads (S, M, L)
• Comply ear pads with memory effect (S, M, L)
• bass and headphone care tool
• USB charging cable -C to USB-A

The package bundle is excellent, which is not surprising considering the Sennheiser IE 80S BT price.

The appearance of Sennheiser in Ear IE 80s

Those familiar with Sennheiser products immediately recognized the wired version of the IE 80S earbuds in the hero of our review. So it is, the manufacturer went to a small trick, taking the earbuds already tested by time, and equipped them with modern filling hidden in the neckband.

The earbuds themselves are made in the form factor of intra-channel monitors with behind-the-ear mounts. This arrangement is convenient in everyday use and does not cause discomfort. The earbuds are well fixed and do not fall out of your ears.

Sennheiser IE 80S BT is connected to the neckband by wires in silicone insulation, prone to tanning in the cold. The rim itself is made of soft hypoallergenic rubber. The main module and the battery are spaced apart at the corners of the neckband, so the earbuds are not afraid of excesses, which allows them to be twisted and put in a pocket for when traveling.

Controls of Sennheiser in Ear IE 80s

On the left side of the Sennheiser IE 80S BT rim are all the controls in the form of standard volume controls (while holding, the tracks are turned over), a play/pause button, and a separate voice assistant call button from the playback device.

Application

Sennheiser has released the Smart Control application for its wireless devices. You can connect earbuds to the device and update the firmware and configure some system functions in it. Besides, it is possible to change the sound of the earbuds using a 5-band equalizer.

Sound

The wired version of the Sennheiser IE 80S BT sounded almost perfect, so it’s good that the manufacturer took this model as the basis.

Earbuds are designed based on a 10 mm dynamic emitter with a frequency range from 10 to 20,000 Hz with a sensitivity of 110 dB. Still, to transmit sound to the emitter, you need to try, especially since we have a wireless model of headphones. To do this, a Bluetooth 5.0 wireless module was chosen, which, together with the popular audio codecs AAC, aptX, aptX Low Latency, aptx HD, SBC, and Huawei’s new proprietary codec – HWA HD transmit sound to a digital-to-analog converter from Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) in which sound is processed. A high-quality signal is transmitted to the emitters.

Listening to the Sennheiser IE 80S BT was conducted with two devices. The first is the Samsung M70 and the aptX codec. The second is the Fiio M5 Hi-Res player with aptx HD. I must say right away that there is a significant difference. The headphones open completely, and the character of the sound changes slightly.

With aptX, the Sennheiser IE 80S BT sounds a bit dry in terms of emotionality. Everything is academically accurate, and it seems that all the tracks are recorded to the same standard. Still, you also enjoy it, as the earbuds have good detail, and the instruments sound vibrantly and reliably. But when aptx HD comes in, the headphones begin to breathe and convey all the nuances, voice transitions. You notice new details in long-known songs, and emotionality becomes much better.

In both cases, the overall picture and the width of the imaginary audio scene were well structured. Low frequencies are surrounding and with good resolution and mass; if it seems a little to someone, there is a physical adjustment on each of the headphones, but if you like classics and more relaxed music, I would not recommend setting the slider above average. Mids and highs harmoniously sound with each other, without developing into porridge.

Microphone

Sennheiser IE 80S BT is not a clean headset, but a headset and transmits sound well thanks to two omnidirectional microphones located above the control panel on the neckband. In addition to the dual microphone, there is an active noise reduction system to improve the sound quality, so when you start a call, you can hear yourself. This whole system copes well in noisy places, and nothing can be transmitted to the interlocutor except your voice.

Autonomy

In Sennheiser IE 80S BT, everything is fine, but it disappointed autonomy, which turned out to be at the declared level – up to 6 hours. Apparently, good emitters and electronics consume a lot of power, so the manufacturer should place a larger battery, especially since the design allows it.
